Henry Rooks died at his home at 13 Inglesby Road, Camberwell, after a long illness. A by-election was organised for South Ward due to the vacancy caused by Rooks' death. James Nettleton was the only candidate nominated and succeded Rooks in his place.[4]

Soon after his death, residents of the City of Camberwell requested meetings with the Council to discuss what might be done to commemorate the memory of Rooks.[5] Subsequent discussions were held over the subsequent months to consider a range of proposals, including the erection of a memorial.[6] A drinking fountain with an inscription to his memory was unveiled on 23 October 1932 adjacent to Camberwell Primary School.[3]
