Frederick William Vear was a councillor for South Ward on Camberwell Council and a prominent resident of Hartwell.

Life

Frederick Vear lived in Burwood for the first part of his life[3], at least until 1917 when is recorded as living in Healesville.[4] He eventually returned to settle in Hartwell before his death in 1945.

He applied for a patent for "an improved lamp for catching and destroying codlin moths and other flying insects".[2]

Family military service

Frederick Vear's son, Kenneth William Vear, enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) to fight in World War One in March 1916 at the age of 23. He served in B Company of the 37th Battalion of the 3rd Australian Division as a signaller, first being promoted to the rank of corporal, lance-sergeant and finally sergeant. His unit was shipped to France in November 1916 on the completion of their training. He was wounded in action on 7 June 1917 but returned to active service shortly afterwards. Sergeant Vear was killed in action while serving in Belgium on 13 October 1917.[4] Camberwell Council moved a motion of condolence upon receiving the news of Kenneth Vear's death, Frederick Vear being mayor at the time of his son's death.[5]

Two of his grandchildren, Kenneth Frederick Vear and Gwenneth Raney Vear, also fought in World War Two.[6][7]

Career

Politics

Vear was involved in politics before his election to the Council, addressing correspondence seeking resolutions to local issues.[8]

Election to Camberwell Council

His nomination at the August 1911 election for Camberwell Council came at the behest of a number of local residents, who reportedly petitioned him to stand.[9] He stood against the sitting councillor, Henry Dench, defeating him by 82 votes.[3]

Council activities

Retirement

After serving five three-year terms on Camberwell Council, Vear decided to retire from his position in August 1926 and not seek re-election.[10]

Death

Frederick Vear died at his home in Hartwell on 13 June 1945.[1]

Legacy

Vears Road in Ashburton is named for his family.
