Herbert B. Barrett was a barrister and councillor for North Riding for the Shire of Boroondara for six years, including as shire president.
Career
Barrett entered politics in a by-election held in March 1893 when Councillor Clarence Hicks resigned from his position. He defeated the only other contender, Henry McKinley, 370 votes to 220.[1]
He became president of the Shire for the term over 1896-1897.[2][3] During this time he continued the Shire's lobbying against the Colonial Government's proposal of differential rates, leading combined local government efforts at the time through the Metropolitan Board of Works.[4]
He was also president of No. 58 Branch of the Australian Natives Association in the 1880s.[5]
In June 1908, he took over the law firm of his brother, H. S. Barrett, in Ballarat.[6]
