Frederick Vear's son, Kenneth William Vear, enlisted in the [[wikipedia:Australian Imperial Force|Australian Imperial Force]] (AIF) to fight in [[wikipedia:World War One|World War One]] in March 1916 at the age of 23. He served in B Company of the 37th Battalion of the 3rd Australian Division as a [[wikipedia:Signaller|signaller]], first being promoted to the rank of corporal, lance-sergeant and finally sergeant. His unit was shipped to [[wikipedia:France|France]] in November 1916 on the completion of their training. He was wounded in action on 7 June 1917 but returned to active service shortly afterwards.
