The name 'Balwyn' is derived from the name of an [[Balwyn Estate|estate]] near the south-west corner of present-day [[Balwyn Road|Balwyn]] and [[Whitehorse Road|Whitehorse Roads]]. The topography of Balwyn North is hilly. Doncaster Road follows some of the ridgeline of the principal hill in the centre of the suburb, which plateaus out for some time before falling towards [[Koonung Creek]] to the north and east. [[Greythorn Park]] is the highest point in Balwyn North.
