Severn Street is a minor street running east-west between Doncaster Road and Gildan Street in the suburb of North Balwyn.

Etymology

Named for the River Severn in the United Kingdom. It was originally named Grenville St for the British Foreign Secretary of the same name until the late 1920s when Gildan Street was constructed and a connection made through to Belmore Road.[1]

History

Severn Street was built as one seven new streets created as part of the Tramway Estate in 1913, along with Nicholson Street, Hatfield Street, Corhampton Road, Aylmer Street, Maylands Avenue and part of Maud Street. It took until the late 1930s before most of the allotments were developed, mainly due to the slow construction of the electric tram along High Street and Doncaster Road.[2]

Notable buildings

  • 1 Severn Street - St Bede's Catholic Church, built in 1961[3]
  • 4-4a Severn Street - heritage maisonette houses built in the 1930s as part of the Tramway Estate
