Mont Albert Park is a park located on the boundary between Balwyn and Mont Albert. It features a playground and large grassed area.
History
An estate subdivided in the mid-1880s was also called 'Mont Albert Park' on Mont Albert Road, but has no relationship with the present-day parkland on Union Road.[1]
The land at the corner of Union Road and Carlyle Crescent was purchased by Camberwell City Council in 1924, who agreed to contribute three-fifths of the land costs - the remaining two-fifths were paid by a local parks committee made up of local residents.[2] A series of fundraising events were held throughout the late 1920s for the Mont Albert School and Park Committee to help pay these costs.[3][4]
Due to interest and agitation from local residents, a series of improvements were made to develop the park into usable open space over the late 1920s. A tree planting scheme was carried out in 1929.[5] . The Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works constructed a new sewer through the land, which Camberwell Council gave permission to proceed somewhat begrudgingly; Cr John Howie agreed "provided the board agreed to finish the work properly".
The present-day Mont Albert Reserve was recommended to be named 'Mont Albert Park' by the Mont Albert Progress Association in 1927. The Association did not appear to have noticed the existing Mont Albert Park.[6]
Facilities
There are no toilets or car parking located within the park. There is a drinking fountain and some small benches.
