The 1916 Camberwell council election was held in August 1916. One seat in each of the three wards was up for election. Only one election was contested; the seat in North Ward, caused by the retirement of long-serving mayor and councillor John Maling.[1]

Campaign
Upon the announcement of John Maling's intention to retire at the 1916 election, two local notables publicly declared their intentions to run. James Sneddon, a local Justice of the Peace, published advertisements in several newspapers announcing his candidacy.[5] William Nott, a well-known landowner and former present of the Balwyn Progress Association, also announced his intention to run. Nott had previously contested the same seat in 1913 and come within 65 votes of defeating Maling.[2]
