Ran unsuccessfully in 1868 for the general election with votes tied with incumbent William A. S. Williamson, lost on casting vote of returning officer.[1]

Upon the resignation of the Board's chairman, Andrew Murray, in November of the same year, Slater ran again and defeated the only other candidate, William Murray, 78 votes to 56.[2] The election featured an anonymous letter published in the local South Bourke Standard sharply criticising Murray and his apparently "modestly obscure" involvement in public affairs.[3]

Elected to Boroondara District Roads Board in 1868, retired in 1871 due to poor health.[4]
